Last month, Platforms released our very first infographic, The Top 20 Most Popular Marketing Automation Solutions , to answer one of the most common questions we get from software buyers: “Which options are the most popular?” The goal of the infographic was to highlight the big players (not necessarily the most suitable for any particular business), and also direct marketers to our comprehensive marketing automation catalog, where they could see how many different options are actually available (187 to date).
So this month, we wanted to explore another area of software for our second infographic - one that has gained a ton of buzz lately thanks to several recent government announcements: electronic health records.
We know many physicians are thinking about EMRs because the U.S. government has set a goal for all healthcare facilities to transition to electronic records by the end of 2014. These solutions, often referred to as “EHRs” or electronic health records, allow physicians to track patient health information, including allergies, prescriptions, and charts, through a centrally accessible system. The difference between the two terms is that an EMR refers to a solution that can be used at a single facility, while an EHR refers to solutions that can be used across multiple facilities. (Some of the solutions listed in our infographic fall into both categories, as evidenced by their target audience.)
Data
Like last time, we started collecting data for the dentist database infographic by looking at the software companies listed in the EMR Platforms software directory . We aim to list every EMR solution on the market, and currently there are 325 of them included (if you notice any missing, let us know !). From there, we narrowed the list by looking at web data for each vendor, including Alexa rank, Compete traffic, and Google searches. While none of these metrics are perfect indicators of popularity (especially for B2B websites), the data allowed us to narrow the list down from 325 to the 50 most visited EMR sites on the web.
For these 50 vendors, we did some additional research to better understand which ones made the “Top 20 Stories.” We again searched their websites and press releases to determine their number of users, customers, and revenue (if listed). We also collected the number of Twitter followers for each EMR company.
However, from some constructive feedback on the latest infographic, we learned that our original data wasn’t the only popularity indicator available. So, we added more data to our popularity index, including:
Facebook likes
LinkedIn Company Followers
Klout Score
Product Reviews (if available)
Surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly), the LinkedIn pages of leading companies turned out to be much more “followed” than their Twitter or Facebook pages. That said, social media only makes up a small percentage of the overall rankings. Once all these data points were collected, we weighted each metric for the 50 vendors (user count being the most weighted) and came up with a list of the top 20. Product reviews, when available, were taken into account when the scores were too close to the bell.
Note: One drawback to this method, which we acknowledge, is that companies that do not publicly publish user, customer, or revenue data will be lower in the popularity index due to the lack of data.
Adding extra "information" to infographics
But this time, we didn't just leave it at the top 20. We wanted to see how we could make this infographic more useful to clinicians looking for an EMR solution. If "what's popular?" is their first question, the next questions are usually, in no particular order:
How much does it cost?
What features do I need?
Will this work for my practice? (i.e. does it service an office of my size and will it work on our computer system?)
So, we’ve included price ranges, platforms, and target audiences for each provider in the infographic. Price range data can vary based on features included, number of practitioners, monthly vs. annual contracts, and a number of other factors. So, to compare apples to apples, we looked at prices for a solo practitioner with the most basic features offered, and divided any annual price into months. Monthly fees for 1 full-time provider ranged from free to over $800, so each dollar comes out to about $200 per month.
We've also added two new charts (shown on the right) that show data based on EMR searches in the Platforms catalog in 2011. The first shows the top 5 most requested EMR features. The second shows which platforms are most in demand - Windows is number one with 61%. However, we've noticed that web platforms are growing in popularity year over year.
So, without further ado, we present to you our second infographic ever published - The 20 Most Popular EMR Software Solutions .
We hope that if you are a clinician looking for a solution, you find this information useful (and that you give us a call if you need help finding one)! Likewise, if you are an EMR vendor, whether you are included in this infographic or not, please provide us with your feedback and make sure your profile is updated in our directory. We know the EMR/EHR space is changing rapidly, and we may update this infographic in the future as the healthcare software landscape continues to evolve.
